Τeaching in the years of an economical crisis.

Well I was asked to comment on the conditions under which we teach in greece and this is really an interesting question. First of all I have to say that I teach in high school and lyceum physics. In greece when you are a physics teacher you are supposed to be capable of teaching geography, chemistry biology astronomy and mathematics in high school!!! This is a quite difficult task since i did not have one single of course of those lesson in the university. Apart from that the obligatory hours of teaching are 21 and after 5 years you teach 19. I know the hours sound easy but you have no support and you have to do with red-tape photocopies , recording the absences of students and several other jobs.
Apart from that you have some privileges like not working july and august and 15 days Easter holidays and 15 Christmas. Generally I consider my job one of the best in the world but also one of the most underpaid. I am paid 800 euros and I have to give an amount on gas to go my school. In the school that I am at least you have no desk and when it is crowded you have no chair!!!! Furthermore in the winter due to cuts (we are in the middle of a severe crisis) you are cold since there is no petrol and we try to use it very little and only for the coldest days of winter. Our school was built around 1930 and the renewall that the building had is minimum.
Apart from all these you have to face the children that are great but lost at the same time since they do not know what to do. On the one hand they think of studying in a university and maybe go abroad or start their own businness. On the other hand they consider the cost of studying and the unemployment and they can not decide what to do. On some children you are not only their teacher but their mother and father since they some from really hard family conditions that are getting worse in due to the crisis(Unemployment and no money do not help a family to solve problems). Τhe whole organisation is very difficult there are psycholists in schools and basically you are thrown in the sea with the sharks afte the univeristy and you swim to survive. I do not want to go into details but the situation is tough like all the professions in Greece but hopefully we will find a way to deal with all these.
